About the Author – Alexander Gates
Alexander Gates is a BJCP Certified Beer Judge and Cicerone Certified Beer Server. He is a regular freelance writer for Frolic Hawaii and Honolulu Magazine where covers Hawaii beer, breweries, and events. He has been published in Good Beer Hunting, Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine, and BeerAdvocate Magazine. In 2018, he won a North American Guild of Beer Writers award in the Best Beer & Travel Writing category for “Where to Drink in Honolulu, HI”. In 2025, he won a North American Guild of Beer Writers award in the Best Brewery Profile category for “Welcome Back, Koholā! A Brewery Destroyed in Last Year’s Fire Reopens”. Currently residing in Honolulu, HI, he grew up in Pennsylvania and attended Penn State University for History & Political Science.
