Broken Boundary Brewery Breaks Out During Stay-At-Home

Broken Boundary Brewery Breaks Out During Stay-At-Home

At a time when the world has stopped and people are stuck at home, Broken Boundary Brewery has opened on Oahu. With their grand opening celebrations planned for March, they already had beer ready to be enjoyed. As beer is a necessity for all of us, they pushed ahead with growler sales to introduce the island to their signature style and catch a glimpse of the new brewery space. It’s Kalihi’s first brewery, located conveniently one street off Dillingham Boulevard behind Kapalama Shopping Center.

Broken Boundary Brewery is the passion project of partners Bill Sumrow and Chris Cook, who built out and transformed the old warehouse space into a comfortable brewery and bar. All the woodwork has been done by hand, mostly with reclamated pallet wood. The brewery itself takes up a large section of the main room with the main bar nearby. Once fully open, they’ll have barstools along every counter area to drink and mingle. In the old garage area is a large refrigerator area for filled kegs as well as ingredient and empty keg storage; maybe you’ll see ping pong and cornhole here to play.

The brewery is in Homebrew in Paradise, the only homebrewing supply store on Oahu. The shop has been reorganized and takes up about half of the floor space as a distinct retail business. Restrooms have been added along the back with barrel sinks, and multiple private rooms. Once completed, Broken Boundary will be a fun place to hang out and drink beer with friends, maybe even learning about the brewing process along the way or stumbling into homebrewing yourself. Plans are to have outdoor picnic table biergarten areas as well. They have dedicated parking stalls in the adjacent lot, street parking is also available.

At the time of this writing, they only offer growler sales to go. Sanitation and cleanliness protocols are in force, with instructions on how to minimize contact while buying beer. Bring your own 32oz, 64oz, or larger (it will be sanitized before filling); all beer styles are priced the same. Merchandise is also available for purchase including glasses, cups, stickers, apparel, and gift cards.

Broken Boundary Brewery is currently pouring five launch beer styles: Ginger Ginger Irish Red ABV 4%; Sucker Punch West Coast IPA ABV 5.8%; Jean Claude Van Blonde Belgian Blonde Ale ABV 7.2%; Carry Your Own Bags Porter ABV 5.1%; and Swaying Hammock Pale Ale ABV 5%. I tried tasters of each and quickly realized their brewing interests lean toward unadulterated classic beer styles. Each had character in their own way but were also clean and well crafted. I personally bought a growler of the porter and IPA and enjoyed having (multiple) full glasses of each.

In this odd time, go out and support a new local business. It’s as easy as drinking beer.
